2018 was a year. There was more humanity in the world than ever before. It was wild. But the people made some brilliant sonic documents that just might outlive their creators. Here is a supremely subjective best-of-2018 music mix, blatantly ignoring all other best-of list. Mostly obscure music from far away that I think is exciting. At last, something to bring together the folk heads and the candy ravers. One of the most ambitious projects to come out of Québec in quite some time, Mélisande [électrotrad] have concocted a booty-shaking fusion of Québecois folk music and electronic jams. Sounds like something that might upset the purists, but Mélisande have gone to great lengths to preserve the authenticity of the source material, even traveling to the U.S. Library of Congress to dig up ancient recordings. La Gallera Social Club are one of the freshest bands to hit my ears and eyes in quite some time. Incorporating many deep Afro-Latin rhythms from the Caribbean coast of Venezuela with the aesthetic of ’60s psych meets time-warped EDM. Más bueno que comer con los dedos!!
